May 22nd, 1977 - The First BMX Race in Australia
otherOn 22 May 1977, Steve Meadows organised what is described as the first BMX race held in Australia, at the end of Busaco Road in North Ryde, Sydney. With help from friends from Eastwood Bike Shop, he cleared overgrown land with a tractor, built a handful of dirt jumps, and marked out a simple start and finish line. Flyers were distributed to bike shops and posted on power poles to spread the word. Around thirty kids turned up to race.
The event quickly led to the formation of the Ryde-Eastwood BMX Club, with regular race meets following and ribbons and trophies awarded to age champions. Meadows is also recognised as a foundational figure in early Australian BMX through his importing work and later the Quicksilver brand, but this North Ryde meeting stands as the earliest known organised BMX race on Australian soil.
