In 1996, Australia has just over 5000 registered riders from 145 clubs. This is the year that the IBMXF/FIAC finally merges with UCI, who takes over managing the sport at an International level. There are now around 48,000 registered BMX riders around the World, affiliated with UCI. Australia has the third highest number of registered riders behind USA (18,000) and France (6,242).

The Australian BMX National Championships were held in Nerang QLD.
